Imran Sherwani, a key figure in Great Britain’s historic hockey gold at the 1988 Olympics, has passed away at the age of 63.
Throughout his distinguished career he inspired people across the hockey community and beyond and also spent time playing indoor hockey for Slough Hockey Club.
Representing Great Britain and England a combined 94 times, Sherwani later dedicated himself to nurturing young talent as director of hockey at a school in Staffordshire. His remarkable sporting journey was rooted in a proud family tradition: his father played hockey for Pakistan, while his great-uncles played professional football for Stoke City and Port Vale.
David Reeves of Slough Hockey Club shared his memories:
“A sad day. I played with him for a season back in Staffordshire as two wingers in the early ’80s, then later against him at Stourport. He went from a skinny youth to being almost unstoppable after joining the police. A gentleman on and off the pitch. He’ll always be a hero of mine—especially after scoring two goals in the Olympic final to beat Germany.”
Imran Sherwani will be warmly remembered for his achievements, his character and the inspiration he brought to so many.
