Slough Ladies 2s were back on home turf after their brilliant win away at Milton Keynes the previous week. In this game against Gerrards Cross 1s, Slough stormed into the game in convincing style with a very strong start from the first whistle launching straight into an attack on the Gerrards Cross defence and within minutes won their first corner of the game. Despite a well worked routine Slough weren't able to convert the opportunity. Minutes later a brilliant passage of play got Bini nijjer the ball which she planted firmly in the back of net for a 1-0 lead to Slough. Slough continued to pressurise the GX goal with a wave of constant attack for much of the first half wining several short-corners but their short-corner routine failed to deliver. Slough had most of the possession and many shots on target but were unable to build upon their lead but the experienced GX team were gaining confidence and started putting in a concerted effort which led to a GX equalizer from a rare but well struck short corner.
Both teams came out after half-time with fresh determination and Slough had a battle on their hands. It was fantastic charcter from the young Slough team that they stuck to their guns and fought off a strong GX challenge. Opportunities were falling to both teams but Slough still threatened more and looked hungrier in their efforts to grab a win. They did exactly that, putting increasing pressure on the GX defence and winning yet more short-corners. The difference was the short corner conversions – whatever was said at half time and the change to their short corner routine resulted in two fantastic goals in 5 mins for Slough; the first after a GX foot in the “D” meant Slough got just reward for their hard work - a brilliant strike from Marissa Pritchard right into the left corner. Moments later Marissa again found the backboard in exactly the same manner and again a well worked short corner that the opposition could do nothing to stop. Slough had to fight hard for much of the second half with GX never giving up. The unstoppable Slough Ladies were not in any mood to let the game get away from them and carried on battling until the final whistle keeping control of the game. GX could only muster a consolation goal with the final score 3-2 to Slough making this their third win out of three. What a fantastic start to the season! Keep it up ladies. Bring on Reading next Saturday!
